"what you want can't be done / all in one day..."
"The Age of Horrible Sanity" by the Dutch alt rock / punk indie duo Those Foreign Kids (guitarist Marijn Westerlaken and drummer Teun Heijmans) is one of those songs that you want to experience LIVE and also grab your guitar or drum kit or whatever you play and jam along to. The dirty guitars sound beyond dirty and the atmosphere these guys are crafting feels beyond feral, maybe a possession of sorts. Like an amalgam of Coachwhips, MEATBODIES, Wand, Bass Drum of Death (and others), there is the feeling that full immersion in artful noise, in a mind altering barrage of sound is cathartic, a sensory deprivation tank where you might turn into your true animal being (or not).
From Press notes:
Those Foreign Kids return from hibernation brandishing their 3rd album, 'Wrestlemania', between their teeth and with 2 (TWO) record labels following their trail: Vibe/Anti-Vibe and Geertruida. The Age of Horrible Sanity is the first single of the album, with a video made by Fan Liao. Taking a famous Edgar Allan Poe quote and applying it to modern times, in which people who think of themselves as ‘the sane’ are partaking in a bizarre ritual of burning themselves out and over-consuming. A jagged, guitar-hook driven noise rock song with explosive diversifications.

History seems to repeat like earthquakes, volcanoes and floods and we are definitely in "The Age of Horrible Sanity", now aren't we. Now we all have a suitable theme song.

Whilst the noise-rock duo start their album woozy and out-for-the-count, they soon steady themselves and deliver a solid stream of high energy garage rock which harnesses the heavily-effected guitar riffs of Marijn Westerlaken, the blistering drums of Teun Heijmans and their shared falsetto vocals. Whilst Those Foreign Kids' previous albums sounded something like a punk rock band soundtracking a slow-mo video of the world imploding, this one sounds more like a straight-up fucking party.
