"so much instrumental goodness here..."
The utter grandeur and audaciousness of "Big Dumb Son of a Bitch" by New York City three piece instrumentalists Iced Ink is, at once, brilliant and vexing. I mean the last part as a compliment. The guys move though incredibly savage prog rock maneuvers one second and the next dip into pearly psychedelia skipping through flowery fields with appropriate harmonics. But don't look away because this track turns on multicolored dimes. The drumming is vicious and the guitar / bass eruptions, explosive and elegant crafting a magnetic soundscape that can only be described as vastly, sonically bi-polar. I thought of an amalgam of Be Bop Deluxe, Rush, Van Der Graaf Generator, King Crimson (to name a few).
If "Big Dumb Son of a Bitch" was a movie it might feature Jim Carrey traversing unknown spaces that feels goofy, avant garde, horrific, whimsical and life affirming, all the while not necessarily making sense, an improvisational ID rollercoaster. How cool is that?
