"I was born around the corner / I don't know about him / as naturalist as nature / how we paid for our sins..."
The scintillatingly artful "Bad Behavior" by UK's BEDROOM TAX is amazingly intricate, cool and feels soaked in nostalgia, at least for an old post punker like myself. The deep wash of sonics (LOVE the guitar sounds), groove cut rhythms and animated vocal patter made me think of proto artists like Ian Drury and The Blockeads (circa 1978) and others like The Specials and Bad Manners. This eclectic five piece band outfit, are of course, their own thing entirely but I sense UK rap fused with a modern iteration of old school two tone which itself was a smashing together of new wave, progressive rock, funk, punk and reggae. I mean I could be wrong and ultimately would have to chat with the boys to find out their direct inspirations and influences.
Press notey stuff reveals:
["Bad Behaviour" emerges as an uplifting anthem that encourages listeners to rise above life's challenges, all while reflecting on the journey they have taken thus far with a smile. Josh Collins leads the chorus, delving into self-exploration and the intricacies of how we become who we are. Meanwhile, Gideon's verses contemplate the passage of time and the person he is becoming, using his experiences as stepping stones for personal growth and unwavering focus on the future. The breakdown sparkles with an irresistible touch of enchantment with Josh's captivating vocals, demanding attention and guiding listeners toward the path that lies ahead.]
I absolutely love this track from top to bottom, I love how it has a bridge, bridges in songs are a rare commodity these days. I love the fidelity too, the sounds are at once punchy but crystal clear, maybe a throw back an older analog sound. Not only that, this song is indie trope free and I love that. I look forward to delving into more of BEDROOM TAX.

Bedroom Tax is an eclectic 5-piece band fusing driving riffs & beats, cinematic strings sections & catchy yet introspective lyricism. The group’s complex & dynamic sound along with their poignant lyrics & subject matter cuts through the noise - drawing comparison to the likes of Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Jamie T & Loyle Carner.
In 2019, Bedroom Tax made appearances on the gig circuit selling out Paper Dress Vintage, Amersham Arms & Dublin Castle. After taking time away to focus on nurturing a more nuanced sound, the band released single 'Kin' in August 22, showcasing a new vocal arrangement, with the inclusion of a lush strings section providing a beautiful backdrop to taut basslines & catchy guitar hooks.
