"I am the gun / I am the word / I own your screens / Haven't you heard..."
You don't hear a lot of art rock these days. I mean it is out there but not like it was in previous eras. So I felt sweet tingles of adrenaline when I felt the operatic art rock pull right away on "Worthless Billionaire" by Brother Wolf, the solo project of Michigan based writer, producer, engineer, multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Hunter who has fronted Love Fossil (since 2005) and Head (since 1999). As I fell into the sort of acid Beatles stair stepping progs and Hunter's pushed theatrical vox, a lovely pastiche of guitar pick sliding crunch distortions on swaying monster rockisms about an indifferent billionaire that may or may not be inspired by Elon Musk (further seeded by his acquisition of Twitter) and as press notes share "immerses the listener in the mindset of an indifferent billionaire, callous to the destructive consequences of their greed on society", I keep hoping and praying that Brother Wolf is able to get this artful song in front of master film maker Darren Aronofsky who will be directing a bio pic of Elon Musk.
Now, a song entitled "Worthless Billionaire" likely has a snow balls chance in hell of being part of a movie that, on the face of it, probably wants to come off as a balanced depiction, but I can dream can't I.
"Worthless Billionaire" is a provocative take on the unfettered lack of self control, of narcissism as a modern disease and hyperbole as a weapon. The stalking nature of the songs cadence feels appropriately sinister and the audaciously beautiful vocal harmonies saturated with bruised up swagger, and doubled leads is at once dreadfully cool but disturbing within the context of the lyrics that might suggest that billionaires will ultimately rule us from the red planet.
You can keep your world
I got a ticket out of here
Sheep and their shepherds know whom to bite
Spacemen don't care
I robbed all the fuel
Hunger never was solved
Instead, I have all of these batteries
You'll buy them all
I'd make a clone of me
When I close my eyes that's all I see
I propose another Elon movie, one where he does figure out how to clone himself but as a pretty much exact copy, Elon 2 cannot stand having a brother and decides to kill Elon 1. Now that's a movie.
