"I was almost beautiful / I was almost your pin up / something in my spirit changed / turned out all fucked up..."
suffer fools, a Vancouver Island, Canadian based conceptual project "centered on debbie debased: former child star, current train wreck, future pop messiah" is an all encompassing mysterious thing. The first glimpse of their sophomore self titled release "suffer fools", dropping the summer of 2024, (the follow up to their 2021 debut album "the rise & fall of d. debased") is the intriguing "almost beautiful".

Feeling the burning nature of "almost beautiful", like a surreal mystification of 50's torch song rock, distillations of 60's Phil Spector with a 70's cigarette dangling heartland rock swagger of Springsteen draws you immediately into the sustained heartbreak. The chunks of low-fi, the emotional distortion, the layers of sounds that feel so vague at times that you might hear horns upon one listen but those horns might seem to have transformed into rattling synths or something else entirely upon the next listen is mesmerizing. There is a sense that the dinge of sounds is as oppressive as the emotional dystopia.
As a descriptor, I am feeling not only a sort of horror pop meets Lynch-ian sadness as I am a David Bowie performance art thing. For me, the vocals are sort of androgynous swirling in an illusory heavy shoegaze haze. Is debbie debased suffer fools' Ziggy Stardust (the rise and fall after all)? Part of me hopes so, it would be easier for me to take the sadness as beautiful as it is.
"I was almost famous / universally adored / I was almost something to you / I was almost yours / it's ok I'm fine / it's ok I'm fine / watching a dream die / it's ok I'm fine / it's ok I'm fine / watching a dream die..."
