"I know it's dark but you'll get used to it / Just admit that you're trapped / And relax and forget all the things that are happening / To you..."
From the first sort of Kodachrome sonics, to the eruptions of alt rock meets power pop escapism, "America (A Love Song)" is so easy to fall in love with. A big highpoint is the vocal aesthetic courtesy of singer /songwriter / guitarist Tristan Jarvis, and the artful musicality throughout with Rob Kelley on bass, TC smith on drums, and Brad Sumner on guitar, from the potent guitar sounds and feedback, the embracing acoustic strains and utter punch and dance of bass and drums in unison. Who doesn't have a love / hate relationship with America, like most countries it can be ghoulish, can be maddening but also inspire the best in all of us, even if those moments might be getting fewer and farther in between, somehow the red, white and blue inspires hope.
What's there to be scared of?
The land of thе freeI'd like to believе
You've got to be brave
The images saved, the analysis made
I'm not insane
Whatever exactly inspired "America (A Love Song)", I absolutely dig The Pilot Waves sound overall. The nuances of sound and big punchy, shiny reflections steeped in a sort of cross generational / cross pollination of late 70's garden rock, 90's indie rock and early aughts post grunge and emo feels addictive. This cool, impactful track ends like this:
I know it's dark but you'll get used to it
Just admit that you're trapped
And relax and forget all the things that are happening
To you
