"Feel that pinch, just a little sting / It's not that bad, just a common thing / Cram it down so deep / Nobody told me how cold it is down here..."
The stalking spiral of "All Metal" by Brisbane, Australia's post punk / 'neo-psyche' / alt rock outfit Eyecolour feels darkly fatalistic. For me, the sensibility, sonically, feels particularly 90's grunge or post grunge. Nihilism in baggy jeans and Vans. What sets "All Metal" apart, though, is the lack of metal, or rather how instead of the heavy grunge guitars, it leans on this amazing dark gritty synth sound. AND, yes, thankfully, the guitars play a big part but the atmosphere is so fucking moody. The synth sounds are exquisitely textured. They scream at you, they have a rustic, vintage sound, they sound, well, metallic, they ring and bend and scrape like a rock guitar with a pick cutting into the strings.
I adore the synergy of all involved, the staggering drunken lead guitar shapes. The bass is gorgeously dark and sounds simply bad ass. I love the symbiotic death walk drumming, the artful lead vocal aesthetic. After multiple listens I thought of Tropical Fuck Storm a bit and The Saints too for different reasons.
