"Tiny fires everywhere / Mamma go and get the hose / Its burning up the stairs / And licking at my toes..."
The stirring folk panorama of "Pass The Fiddle To The Beast" by Brighton, England based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Sam Abbo (bassist in the rising Jazz-Punk group Opus Kink) is so dynamically rich that you cannot help but see a movie in your head. Of course, each movie will be vastly difference but Abbo's evocative vocal presence assures us all that he will be the star, the leading man. Possessing a back in the throat growl full of scowl and an animated calm within the fray, Abbo's voice is one that is unique, one that you will easily remember the second, third, thousandth time around. The blended aesthetic here feels a little beach goth, a little honky tonk, a little folk country, a little Western noir and 70's garden rock all blended with a daring romantic flair.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[Speaking on the track, Abbo says “‘Pass The Fiddle to The Beast’ is a honky tonk sing-a-long about alcoholism and making music, brought to life by Becka Wright on violin, kindly filling in for the devil who was too busy to bust out a solo on the record. It’s the first single from my upcoming album "Add to the Noise" recorded over an extended period of time with Jake Smallwood at Farm Road Studios in Brighton. The death of a friend kicked off an intense period of writing music. After some time frantically and aimlessly creating songs to cast into the void, I decided it would be a good idea to put them all together and give the nothingness an album to chew on.“]
[Aside from Opus Kink, Abbo has received high praise with his previous project ‘Strange Neighbours’ - Collaborative tracks featuring Hideous Recordings alumni Sienna Bordello (Black Bordello) Maisy Banks (The Winches), Dominic Rose (Fake Turins) on vocals of tracks such as ‘Black Cat Walking’ & ‘Devil On The Scene’ and KAETO (Polydor Records) on ‘Aburrida’ gaining nods from Tastemaker magazines such as Clash, Hard of Hearing and So Young.
‘Black Cat Walking’ featured countless times on Brighton & London’s BBC Introducing, being named track of the week.]
