"I found a copy of Tea for the Tillerman / they had the album on tape / tell the girl with the Mexican dress / I wanted to go back home...
The hushed storytelling of "Tiny Door" by Portland Oregon's BIRDWAR not only feels wistful and half soaked in equal parts loss and regret but hits you in the gut because the words illicit touchstones, memories from the past that feel relatable. Somehow against the jammy indie rock swirls and chunkiness I guess it is easy to insert your own touchstones. Formed in 2023 by Matthew Hoiland (guitar, vocals), Matthew Hamm (bass), and Ethan Boardman (drums), BIRDWAR's eponymous debut album is releasing this summer (2024).
In LINER NOTES, these talented guys describe their sound as Dinosaur Jr meets Elliott Smith and it makes sense to me. I also thought of a band like Silversun Pickups because of the vocal countenance but what really draws me to BIRDWAR's aesthetic (here) is the storytelling, the artfulness of it all, maybe like an amalgam of Jim Carroll and Billy Corgan as poets / as lyricists. It is wonderful when songs pierce into your brain and then sink into your heart. When the lyrics make you want to read between the lines, to see a movie in your head and pick the author's brain then what is there not to love?
