"Can't break this gross hypnosis / Can't break this gross hypnosis / Can't break this gross hypnosis"
The ultra passionate, progressively sprinting, hybridized alt rock, celebratory psychosis of "Gross Hypnosis", by Los Angeles based psychedelic alt rockers Dark Dazey, is like a witch grabbing you by the ribs and breathing a kissed spell right down your throat. The absolute full throttle psychedelic punk garage attack from the onset is not only bad ass thrilling (in a OSEES-ian kind of way) but what is about to come musically, feels like one of those weird indie flick tonal shift that throws and audience off their collective feet. At about 3 minutes in, one of the guitar rhythmic shifts turns inside out and, in fact, the entire song tonally goes from punk garage rock to a decidedly more abstract progressive rock / post rock jam that feels more askew, like an amalgam of Radiohead / Ravi Shankar / Porcupine Tree / Ataxia. I am officially, gleefully giddy at the change.
"Open up my eyes to see
A shattered crystal ballA shadow hanging over me
My back against the wall
Pulsing through my body and
Through my fingertips
The specter seals the deal a spell
Falls from icy lips
You who release from beyond the horizon
Creature lacking in bile or bone
Open your eyes see that I'm in control
Hypnosis"
There are other artistic tones. I close my eyes and see (of all things) The Allman Brothers Band fly by and Phish and Levitation Room and Pink Floyd and Pond and more. Suddenly, genres disappear or merge and it is more about artistic timelessness and impermanence at the same time. I am happily transported by Dark Dazey in surprising ways.
On a previous write up about this amazing band I said things like"
"there is some cross pollination or maybe cross contamination of heavy metal alt rock and post punk / trash punk filtered through psych rock / slacker rock (maybe) and I dig this"
AND:
"I am especially enamored with the vocal aesthetics here that can feel sort of conscious emo (if that's a thing) and the jagged stabs of sound during the musical breaks that sound so fucking maniacal. Like a collision, amalgam, stew of artists like Faith No More, Primus, Helmet, Butthole Surfers... so much meaty sonics to chew on, so much"
NOW, I always stand on my perceptions I feel at any given time when I experience them and try to put them into words. These current perceptions on "Gross Hypnosis" feel different and that makes me enormously happy. Dark Dazey, after all, feel more expansive than I thought the first time around.
