"I've been waiting for so many nights / just waiting all for you / I've been trying to get it right / just waiting all for you..."
The magical rolling alt rock gospel of "Speaking In Tongues" by Holy Roller Baby, the musical moniker of singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Jared Mullins, feels alt art rock grand and electric dreamy. From the get go Mullins draws from classic places, (to me) I feel, the melancholy emotionalism in the vocals, the tubular electric guitar sound that feel seeded from iconic artists like Badfinger, like Queen with hints of Beatles blues burned psychedelia.
Mullins shares, “‘Speaking in Tongues’ is probably my favorite song I’ve ever written. Something ethereal and magical about it. I hope someday that this applies to a love in my life, but I can’t honestly say it’s inspired by anyone in particular. When we added the Mellotron in the studio and heard it against the vocals I literally wanted to cry it was so moving.”
From LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[Holy Roller Baby’s upcoming album "Smile Like Heaven", was recorded between Valve Studios, in Dallas, TX and Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire, England with producer Ian Davenport [Radiohead, Band Of Skulls]. Smile Like Heaven was recorded in one room as the musicians performed live.
Mullins shares: “I never want the songs to sound the same. I want the sound to be unpredictable and tap into different nuances. Ian is like a band member at this point, and we bounce ideas off each other. The process was comfortable because we had the foundation of the first record.”

Rock rolls with primitive swagger in the music of Holy Roller Baby. With music as spirited as their name suggests, the band blends the best of 70s string-bending guitar rock with an undeniably forward-thinking perspective. Raucous and gritty with a focus on songwriting, melody, and substantive lyrics, the band plays glorious rock at concussive volumes while swinging to an unmistakable beat, filtering a thunderous bluster through a soul crooner's sensibility. Founded in 2017 in Austin, Texas, the four-piece, led by the songwriting of Jared Mullins and using two lead guitarists, was invited to record their debut album at Radiohead’s Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire, England. Together with producer Ian Davenport (Band of Skulls, Supergrass, Philip Selway of Radiohead) the band recorded a blistering 50-minute, 12-track album that combs through a diverse array of blues-tinged rock, even borrowing amps and percussion from Radiohead and guitars from Gaz Coombes (ex-Supergrass) to do so.
