"Watch me / In the motion of your eyes / Touch me / See the color in the sky / I’m empty / For what I crave / Without you In a cast of gray (x2)..."
The translucent, deeply grooved synthpop universe of "Without You" by San Diego California's Glass Spells runs on dream fuel distilled from 80's and beyond darkwave, new wave, alt rock, baroque pop post punk shapes. The band is at it's core the duo of vocalist Tania Costello and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Ramirez and whether they flush out their sound live as a duo or utilize added members, they have cultivated a large fanbase. This has a lot to do with their custom blend of sounds, a hybridized alt pop rock iteration maybe seeded from the sonic nucleic acid of 80's outfits like Air 89, Romeo Void, Yazoo, Animotion, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie And The Banshees or contemporary artists like Kraków Loves Adana and Ötzi, or an amalgam of all of these impactful artists. However you dissect Glass Spells' universe building, it is their own, it is unique and is inspiring future artists. The density of Glass Spells' sound is so well rounded. I especially appreciate the dynamic range they bring to the table from the tubular bottom to their synth bass to the mid-range breath of the synth key embellishments. I have the sense that Anthony Ramirez's desired master sound feels less compressed and more akin to old school analog mixes. Tania Costello's vocal countenance draws you in. The character of her voice feels self aware in it's artfulness. The drawing out of her words, the rush or repose (to me) contains equal parts aloof edginess and bold emo potency. As an old dog who has been around a long time, I have a tendency to attach sonic pioneers from my day, which, could be an contextual oversight. I mean, this sound is really no longer a revival sound but an absolutely fresh one.
