"A home you own / I'm crashing / A hole in bone / It's lasting..."
Madam Sad and the transformative sonic elixir of "Hope For You" feels like voyeuristic cinema fueled by tender vocals, moments of ambient sounds filtered in, cathartic folk indie guitar / piano and beautiful sort of surreal orchestrations. To be honest, at first I didn't know what to make of the song maybe because, at times, the vocals were hard to decipher and the structure was so different but over the course of listening a few times it thoroughly pulled me in.
Madam Sad started as a folk project between trans artist Maddison Schreiber (they/he) and Evelyn Charlotte Joe (they/them) bringing Schreiber's songs to fruition. "Hope For You" in it's understated way, soaked in sadness and beauty feels like a documentary. I am all about documentaries of all kinds, peers into strangers lives until they don't feel like strangers anymore. Schreiber's lyrical poetry, beautifully raw, feel like puzzle pieces that could only be put together with hidden information written on the back of each piece but, for me, that only makes her words more entrancing.
LINER NOTES about "Hope For You":
[“Hope For You,” has two parts, both inspired by love for different people. A feeling of rejection and loss for something that was never real, a sort of limerence.]
“The song title is a way of holding myself accountable to make sure I am always hoping for the happiness of those who have hurt me,” says Maddison Schreiber. “I also do get to a more genuine place where I feel compassion for an ex-lover’s success, and that’s a nice kind of sad.”
"Hope For You" tugged at me so much that I perused the many tracks from Madam Sad's 2023 album "Paradise" and the dive is so worth it. I need to swim deeper but Schreiber and her collaborators, again, have a way to document her life, pain, trauma, healing, all of it in vulnerable ways. Peering at open wounds, celebrations, the stuff of one's private diary or journal. It may not be for you but I think it is for the most of us.
Six years ago, Maddison Schreiber felt pushed to be a musician out of love and spite, which to this day continues to follow into their art. Maddison and Evelyn Charlotte Joe spent around two years working on this upcoming album as the folk project known as Madam Sad, through which they both suffered from poverty and flare ups with disability.
Schreiber shares:
"I'm a trans person from Hamilton Ontario. I'm neurodiverse and have c-PTSD along with other illnesses, and am currently disabled because of it. I make music to desperately grasp at an unknown satisfaction that helps the void. To not do it is suffocating. We are all sad. Helping my community process emotions means the world. I hope my music can make a close connection with you and another, or you and yourself. If you can find me come talk to me!"

I'm crashing
A hole in bone
It's lasting
A home you own
Detaching
A hole in bone
Contracting
The rings you sing
It's maddening
I hope you're full
You're healing
You
Hear
All the things you shouldn't
Fear
It was never more than
Taste
Space for you to
Disappear
Was it crazy for
My head
Was it wild to
Have said
All the things you shouldn't
Take
What a gift to have to
Face
