"outside / a whole lotta cretins / truth is / I don't know a thing..."
A mere 12 seconds into the artful frenzy of "Lactation Device" by Denmark alt rock hybrid I Am Bones and I am hooked and it's not because I instantly want to play drums to this track (well maybe) but, rather, the intensity of the vocal attack (straining and 80 grit), the low slug Seattle grunge guitar swing, the pummeling drums glued to the throbbing bass lines all in cohesion just feels damn invigorating, intoxicating and, quite frankly, bad ass.
At a certain point, "Lactation Device" goes from a grunge barrage to grunge saturated in post hardcore shapes further saturated in psychedelic art rock. I would tell you when that happens but no need to cuz you will know. The glammy falsetto "wooooohooo baby what's that sound?" (or thereabouts) adds other textural tones that feel sort of 80's power pop. This track is the kind of song that begs to be heard LIVE, hope that happens sometime via You Tube (wink).
LINER NOTES:
Inspired by a LinkedIn-induced violent fantasy, ‘Lactation Device’ is a menacing punk rock song that feels like the entire narrative arc of an extended amphetamine binge with Sonic Youth. and part of the double single, Crawl Space / Lactation Device. Their upcoming EP, "Conjuctivitis" is on the way.
AND
Inspired by 90’s grunge, sludge and lo-fi, I am Bones released two critically acclaimed albums through Morningside Records in the early 00's. Years of silence ensued, though frontman Johannes Gammelby kept busy (and not at all silent) with both Beta Satan and The Malpractice. In 2016, a single was released. And then an EP, 'Oaf', followed in 2018. Another single in 2019. Then an EP 2020 - the densely packed 'Lobster Vibes', equal parts claustrophobic and catchy. Now, the band are gearing up to release their 489th EP, 'Conjuctivitis', coming soon to an Internet near you!
I Am Bones are Johannes Gammelby on vocals / guitars, Jeppe Lindgren on drums, Christian Winther on bass and Claus Søgaard Andersen on guitar.

Hope you’re ready for some bone-rattling, grunge-infected alternative rock as we have the pleasure of bringing you the forthcoming EP from I Am Bones, ‘Conjunctivitis’, set for release on Crunchy Frog on August 23rd.
Aside from its direct and literal reference to the eye infection, ‘Conjunctivitis’ is also a pun. Conjunctions are words we use to tie it all together. Here, we’re dealing with infected conjunctions; the stuff that binds us is inflamed. Its direct meaning, the aforementioned eye infection, affecting your literal outlook is also fitting. You can try to close your eyes, but the stinging irritation is with you even in attempted isolation. This is the theme that runs as an unpleasant undercurrent on an EP consisting of relentlessly heavy, heartbreakingly melodic and irresistibly catchy songs.
Track by track in a random order: ‘Crawl Space’ is an intimate, mellow tune with a scent of Nirvana, recorded at home with a laptop mic, whereas ‘Lactation Device’ is a menacing punk rock song, a bit like Sonic Youth on amphetamine. As for the rest of the tracks, both ‘Bump Down’ and ‘Mirroring’ are heavier and more eerie, referencing the darker corners of grunge and all the drop-tuned way back to Black Sabbath and the primordial soup of heavy metal. ‘Lip Service’ is mined from a similar vein - a bedrock of stoner rock and sludge, and the most epic and hypnotic piece of work on this contaminated and contagious, ear-wormy collection of songs.
