"nobody really wants to know ya / they don't even hear you name / all they ever want is some recognition / no one ever knows all the trouble it takes..."
The tom tom rattling, bass droning, fuzz saturated "Trouble it Takes" by NYC- based grungy rock outfit Kibby, is wonderfully, audaciously dirty. The sheer amount of distorted wonk, the barrage of subversive sonic muck is simply smile inducing. To some that don't understand how this kind of sound, a sound past the edges, in between the lines, across the tracks ultimately feels happy even if it might comment on distressing things, societal inequities, the sonic barrage stings me with a pervasive feeling akin to something really life affirming.
Attitudinally I thought of other adrenaline spiking utterly non-normie artists like Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfers, Chrome, Wipers or anyone else of that ilk. Ilk is an interesting word isn't it.

Important LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[NYC- based grungy rock outfit Kibby started as an idea in late 2018 in Queens, NY. The concept for Kibby had one clear goal… to release one album a year for 10 years straight. Kibby has stayed on his path, now set to release his 5th album "Whatever Happened To Honor" to be released in August of 2024.]
[Leading the new album is his single/video “ Trouble It Takes," , out July 5th, which Kibby describes as "A driving and brooding track about the dangers of pride. This song is written from the perspective of a bad person who doesn’t know they are bad and just wants a little recognition for all their hard work."]

Kibby started as an idea in late 2018 in Queens, NY. The concept for Kibby had one clear goal… to release one album a year for 10 years straight. After the release of Kibby’s debut album, Seance Rock, coincided with New York City shutting down in 2020 the project pushed forward firmly as a studio band. Kibby is the textbook definition of DIY with the next two releases, 2021’s Blabracadabra and 2022’s Ta Da, being completely self-produced in various NYC studios and a railroad apartment in Queens.
After relocating to Manhattan in 2022 work began on Kibby’s fourth studio album. Not Not Cool Anymore, released in 2023, had a heavier, sludgier, rock sound featuring layers of distorted guitars and big live drum sounds.
Kibby has now filled out into a gritty 4 piece band set to play shows in NYC to promote their 5th studio album in as many years. Whatever Happened To Honor is set to release in August of 2024.
[According to Kibby, “The new album is full of songs that are pretty diverse in subject matter. It is a long album for me so it goes a lot of places. If I had to zero in on some overall theme for the album it would center around honesty, the lyrics all kind of have this, “don’t sugarcoat it” nature to them. Whether it is being prideful, or dealing with aging, or being honest about what you want from a relationship, all the songs are kind of saying, “okay don’t bullshit me. What do you really mean?”. In that way, the title of the album comes into play. When I look around at my immediate culture right now, and culture as a whole, I see a lot of people trying to hide from the truth. People having no interest in looking at anything head-on. So it becomes pretty hard to act with any honor if you don’t even want to be straight up about what is going on in the first place. The album title is very purposely not a question. There is no question mark. It’s a statement.”]
"Trouble it Takes" is not for everyone but it is for those of us who like noise, like change, like the progressive side of things, believes in the evil in people but has faith the good in people will prevail even if it takes a 5000 years. That feels like hope to me.
