"You don’t have to say my name / ‘Cause it’s all written in the air / You don’t have to say my name / I’m not physical..."
The feral alt rock, art rock metal exorcism of "Don't Say My Name" by Oaxaca, Mexico bred, Chicago based Triplets of Gonzo, hits my senses in so many distinct ways like a film you think is going to one way but subverts all expectations. Maybe, upon reflection, a lot of this divergent attraction has to do with how the song is framed. It begins so exquisitely raw and bad ass, fueled by a three piece keys, drums, guitar swagger that feels at once like a potent drunken stumble as it does one baring a pushed out chest and posturing up on the balls of your feet before a fight. This very powerful musical aesthetic as a bold framework for Selinger Gonzo's wildly evocative vocal countenance works because she is just as powerful while sounding not unhinged but rather, totally emotionally invested. Her inspired wails coming from a deep well, in touch with joy and extreme pain and every sensation in between.
if you don't hold my hand
‘Cause I’m tired of tears that are healed with a kiss if you don't hold my hand"
Selinger is all ID here as if possessed by the song, the words and maybe even what lies in between them and like other such vocalists (and Anna von Hausswolff,Carla Lippis, Lisa Micallef Grimaud, Diamanda Galás come to my mind) her vocals can explode one moment and croon the next, all the while on a razor's edge of unpredictability. I love this and I love the jagged angular guitar work by Jess Northup and Todd Water progressive surprisingly off kilter drumming. Liner notes reveal that Selinger Gonzo also plays keyboards.
"Don't Say My Name" with it's massive sideways pummeling takes a heady darkly dreamy shift around 2/3rds in (or thereabouts). The drama shifts under cascades of melancholia heading to a dark beautiful crescendo. Amazing indeed.
