"I’ve got my eye on you / said the child to the man / What are you plotting to do with the rest of that sand? / You gonna throw it in my eye? / You gonna make a child cry? / You gonna dig a deep trap? I’m not falling for that ..."
The unabashed transporting baroque rock balladry of "Bedding Down With The Deer" by Minneapolis based singer-songwriter, international retreat guide / yoga teacher Mary Bue, stretches out in front of you, emotionally vast, lushly artful and openly bruised but not bloodied. The bold piano / vast guitar falling within the bohemian folk rock / baroque pop troubadours like Elton John, like Heart, like Kate Bush and Tori Amos, Mary Bue (here) has a nostalgic tone maybe seeded in those 70's musical shifts that seemed to poke around more mystical corners than today's contemporary artists. I feel this grounded sound, this analog sound not only within the production and psychedelia here but also within Bue's earthy vocals and when the harmonies fall in (what feel like self harmonies) I am fully smitten and artfully punched in the gut. The masterful vocal melodies, while rock guitar and orchestrations push through psychedelic haze is something to behold.
The LINER NOTES (bracketed) reveals secrets and stories that grip you by the throat and begs further investigation.
[This album "The Wildness of Living and Dying" - and particularly this song ("Bedding Down With The Deer") - surrounds a traumatic experience of being carjacked by two teenage girls outside of her house in November 2020.
“In ‘Bedding Down with the Deer,’ I sing of wishing I could sleep with the deer in their soft forest beds (if they would let me) as that feels ‘safer than my corner, safer than my own damn bed, safer than my own head.’ The song then opens up my own hope for how we could cultivate compassion for those who are processing trauma & hard times.”]
"Been spending most of my nights
Bedding down with the deer
Soft padded pillows of grassand their warm bodies near
I feel safer with the deer than the lights of the city
Safer than my corner
Safer than my own damn bed Safer than my own head
Take your sweet time
There is no rush
We won’t leave you behind
(least not the ones you should love) Rest as long as you need
Sleep as deep as you can
Reach when you need a hand
We’ll do our best to understand"
