"Pointed toward scaly theatrics / Some numberless and un-ravished shells / And conventions that ground us in moans / When filthy rivers are the fashion our guilty cleft minds / Are pregnant reproach / And are contrary to the country..."
The punk throttle and western noir politico bite of "Cleft", by Oakland- California's FKA Smiley, swings and sways with rabid abstractions of sound and machine gun drumming / rhythms. The Sprechgesang punk vocal style, an intersection of performance art spoken word and that one guy at the liquor store who clearly parrots the voices in his head, sound absolutely killer given the forward feral percussive engine of sound that the sonics provide. This is the kind of musical bed that you want to jump up and down on and if you play, you want to feel what it is like to perform this artfully, potently delicious track.
"Contrary to the country
The country of our parents and our children
A lonely rebirth broadcast on a cage
An elevated attendance
Inebriation
Arbitrary
Grasping and word heaps parallel and criss crossed"
The country of our parents and our children
A lonely rebirth broadcast on a cage
An elevated attendance
Inebriation
Arbitrary
Grasping and word heaps parallel and criss crossed"
AND
"Parallel and criss crossed our cleft minds are pausing at the pits
Slow feet hesitate
Rest
Refrain from breaking
From muddying the cadence of their doomed progression
And our botched curation
So we borrow the acoustics"

From muddying the cadence of their doomed progression
And our botched curation
So we borrow the acoustics"
The poetry, the words mosh in a way that you might get an eye poked out. The words stab out ideas, interpretations, gems of subversive abstractions, talking points to help change minds and to rant like we all should.
"Cleft" is the second single off of their forthcoming massive 16 track debut album, "All Good Boys Go to Heaven" which I haven't delved into but surely will over time.
LINER NOTES:
"Music video included. This song has a repetitive structure to align with the meaning in the lyrics (marching along destroying the planet with capitalism), but then we shake things up at the end. "

FKA Smiley is a scrappy mutt conceived between the worst states of the union, transmuting the techno-swamp hellscapes of California and Florida. Four friends brought together by a Penis-Envy era Crass Halloween cover band, and united under a pie in the sky vision of doggy heaven. An aesthetic instinct concocted between the gig economy, phone recorded riffs, service industry doubles, multiple pregnancies, beta brain wave transmissions, and liters of Gatorade. If life is tornado, FKA Smiley is the CGI cow being spun around for cinematic effect. To hear FKA Smiley is to think: "great job." Also our drummer is better than your drummer.
