"Last night I got to know you / My someone I’m holding on to / She picked up all the pieces / That mess that you’ve created / Secretly I believe / We disagreed then disappeared..."
The romantic visions, sonic nostalgia and midnight escapisms of "Last Night", by Hamburg dream pop duo Roller Derby, is so exquisitely adept at transporting you to other places and times that it feels so freeing, a much needed getaway during these tumultuous times. As a dreamy follow up to 2023's beautiful EP "Always on My Mind", this track is their fifth release (after last year's single drops ‘Ready To Forget’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Silver Jet’ and ‘Emily’s Dance’) from their debut album "WHEN THE NIGHT COMES" set to drop on February 28th, 2025.
I am taken aback by how wonderfully evocative "Last Night" sounds, feels taking emotional cues from 80's / 90's indie rock / post punk. In fact, while listening I thought of a crush inducing amalgam of The Cranberries, Cocteau Twins, Strange Boutique, The Sundays (off the top of my addled brain). Key to this sound and so well rendered here is the jangly guitars, crystalline synths, the amazing throttling bass sounds, super charged drumming and, most assuredly, Philine Meyer’s magnetic vocal countenance. Meyer's vocal stance is perfectly poised between lost and longing, between raw bedroom pop and indie rock elegance. Much appreciated too are the harmonies mixed in subtly like a lovely emotional undercurrent and the evocative guitar / dream theater musicality of Manuel Romero Soria.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[The new single is accompanied by a beautifully poignant video. Directed by Emily Macrander, it offers a moving depiction of the protagonist’s emotional journey, guided by lights and memories that lead her deeper into her past.]
"Last night I got to know you
My someone I’m holding on toShe picked up all the pieces
That mess that you’ve created
Secretly I believe
We disagreed then disappeared
When I’m far from the dark
No more feeling alone
I’m waiting for sunrise
And you, you don’t
Take me to bed
Cause yesterday’s gone
I’m waiting for sunrise
And you, you don’t"
Conceptually, songwriting wise, I appreciate how the verse melodies seem to come in two parts stylistically (or maybe the secondary melody might be considered as a pre-chorus). However you slice it, the structures here surprise and sweep you away. Love this sound, this song.

Roller Derby is both the name of a feminist roller skating sport and the name of the Hamburg-based dream pop duo founded in 2020, whose music builds a bridge between nostalgic 80s sounds and modern indie pop. Their musical inspirations range from the 60s and 80s to current artists such as Angel Olsen, Alvvays and Beach House. Philine Meyer's dreamy vocals float above the warm guitar sounds of Manuel Romero Soria.
Roller Derby have achieved numerous milestones since their formation. These include sold-out headline shows in Hamburg, Berlin and London as well as appearances at renowned festivals such as the Reeperbahn Festival, the Appletree Garden Festival and the Dockville Festival. Roller Derby gained international attention through their participation in showcase festivals such as SXSW in Austin, Texas, and the Great Escape in Brighton. Their songs have over four million streams on Spotify and the single “Always on My Mind” (Practise Music, 2023) has made it onto numerous international playlists (including Feel-Good Indie Rock, Indie x Running).
Since May 2024, Roller Derby have released their first singles “Dreams” and “Silver Jet” from their debut album “When The Night Comes”. Produced by Moses Schneider, the album will be released on February 28, 2025.
Ahead of the album’s release, Roller Derby have shared another captivating single. Exploring themes of change and acceptance, glistening new single ‘Ready To Forget’ (Spetember 12, 2024) brings a fresh energy to the duo’s ever-evolving sound, showcasing a grittier edge than we may be familiar with. Fusing together Roller Derby’s trademark shimmering synth sounds and jangly guitars with an upbeat danceable groove, Philine Meyer’s luscious celestial vocals soar throughout; questioning the moment when it’s time to let go: “When is our time to go / Are you ready to forget me?”
In spring 2025, the band will go on tour in Europe to present their new album. The “When The Night Comes” tour will take them through various cities:
