"devil in the window / blocking out the sun / following the signal / you follow everyone..."
The vast desert surf alt rock atmospheres of "Out of Sight" by Seattle based psych rock outfit Peyote Ugly, and from their upcoming EP "Beyond the Great Divide" (dropping on April 18th, 2025), feels darkly romantic and exists somewhere between desert rock and beach goth or maybe is both colliding together. There are throttling surf punk drum beats, booming bass, vintage Farfisa-esque new wave organs, ultra percussive guitar rhythms pulling and pushing in dissonant teeth, huge guitar down beats, potent western noir guitar rock lead lines and evocative vocals, at once as shouty as intimate.
The sound cuts in mysterious ways, feels retro in a good way, psych rock woozy but balls to the walls heavy too, a combination of things making me think of an amalgam of artists like Levitation Room, Night Beats, Rozwell Kid, Mean Jeans (or thereabouts). Whomever is engineering / producing is killing it. I am hearing a straight live sound (to me) with production embellishments but not too too much and I like that a lot.
In the final analysis, "Out of Sight" feels indie cinematic, a bloody chase scene, a sense of A24 and a feeling that this songs needs to bolster a future flick or inspire one. The sense is off kilter but in a commercial way like there is a pop prowess to the mayhem.

Peyote Ugly is a Seattle-based psychedelic rock band formed in 2015, consisting of Elliot Preston, Brennan Moring, Sebastian Brown Glad, and Connor Johnson.
“Seattle’s Peyote Ugly is a dreamy psyche-wave quartet that fuses shimmery vocals, spacy synths, and large, melodic guitar riffs with a smidge of indie-pop. Their musical stylings collide at a sweet spot of art rock where the proto-prog-psychedelia vertices of Pink Floyd’s 'Comfortably Numb' and Blue Oyster Cult’s 'The Reaper' (without the cowbell) meet the modern hallucinatory harmonics of Tame Impala’s 'The Less I Know the Better' and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 'Slow Jam 1.' Peyote’s expansive soundscapes are well thought out and supported by rich lyrics that explore storylines with abstract, metaphysical themes.”
