"I don't want to do this dance / I miss the spark / I miss the romance / I see your eyes / drift to my lips / so what are you waiting for?"
The potent 80's-esque promise and artful sexuality of "Heart To Heart", by Los Angeles sonic / emotional powerhouse Child Seat, is at once, a pure adrenaline injection as it is a desperate plea for passion in love and life (at least that is how I see / feel it). Amid the pulsating synth tones, artful guitar shapes, dance beats you have Madeleine Mathews massive vocal countenance. In terms of such a forceful throaty force of nature voice she has the artful power of singers like Annie Lennox or Alison Moyet, and yes, they come to mind because of their 80's Halcyon days. A more contemporary comparison might be a Florence Welch or Adele, suffice it to say Mathews for Child Seat's artistic pop rock / post punk lean is a perfect, killer, uniquely built voice. Her vocal power dripping with emotional layers always blows me away. Child Seat's other half, Josiah Mazzaschi, as co-songwriter, musician, accomplished producer build sonic universes that never feel overly produced but, instead, perfectly a mixture of polished power but with an artful lo-fi hearted temperament which I love.
As is often the case, my train of thought jumped to another track. My initial feeling about this amazing track "a pure adrenaline injection as it is a desperate plea for passion in love and life" needs a brief explanation. As we have evolved as a society (some of us anyway) there is probably 50 to 60 years of rock and roll songs that cover a lot of subject matter but one of the mainstays have been sexual allure, conquest, longing and such and too often (under modern lens) there is a whole lot of predatory songs by men that, in the least, suggest inappropriate behavior and sometimes directly stating toxic stuff that has added to the male rape culture that has done so much damage in our society. I don't know what I am driving at exactly and I write all this stuff off the top of my head but I think my point is that this song is fucking refreshing in it's battle cry for romantic passion and lust for life instead of males grooming underage girls. I love how the script has been flipped over the last decade. I applaud the wealth of songs by women, by LGBTQ+ artists who craft songs about survivorship and sexual passion (and all kinds of passions). I will step down from my soapbox now.
Anyway, Child Seat drops another glorious banger, a potent synthwave meets indie rocker that feels like an anthem for living life to its fullest, (actually a lot of Child Seat's songs feel like that).
"Heart To Heart" is from Child Seat's upcoming 3rd full length album.

Child Seat, the powerhouse duo formed in the Fall of 2021 by Madeleine Mathews (MAWD) and Josiah Mazzaschi (Light FM, Bizou), turns pandemic setbacks into indie rock gold. With the entirety of their debut album written remotely during the pandemic, Mathews’ powerful rock vocals, reminiscent of artists like Brittany Howard/Karen O./Annie Lennox, creates a unique juxtaposition over Mazzaschi's 80's synth-heavy instrumentals with a hint of the indie rock/pop bands of the early 2000’s/2010’s. Child Seat is also joined by their core members Allison Loewe (bass/ backing vocals) and Argel Cota (drums/ backing vocals).
Child Seat has been busy since their birth.
Playing successful showcases in SXSW in 2023, opening for The Regrettes for a sold out show presented by Dr. Martens, touring, and performing all around Los Angeles. They recently released their second album, “Dancing at the Disco” in June 2024, which notably features Jon Button on bass (The Who) and Nancy Kuo on violin (Courtney Love, Linda Perry, H.E.R., Allison Mosshart, Megan Thee Stallion) and Ron Dzbuilba on saxophone (Jon Batiste).
Additional band highlights include songs featured in the indie horror film, It Lives Inside, as well as The CW’s Legacies, and MTV’s 16 & Pregnant and a collaboration with Jeff Schroeder previously of “The Smashing Pumpkins” who plays guitar on their song, “Burning” off their debut record, “Bad Holiday,”.
The band has also been featured multiple times on KCRW, SiriusXM, 88.5, KROQ and more.
Child Seat encompasses both Mathews and Mazzaschi’s strengths. Mazzaschi has over 20+ years of success recording and producing artists like The Jesus and the Mary Chain, Jeff Schroeder of the Smashing Pumpkins, Deap Vally, Built to Spill, Rilo Kiley and more, as well as writing/performing for his own projects; Light FM, Motorhome, and Bizou. Mathews, who has fronted and written for numerous bands as well has won songwriting competitions, is defined by her unique vocal styling and powerful lyricism.
Child Seat is currently in the studio finishing up their third album. New songs to be released in 2025.
