"the beginning with an absolutely eerie soundscape that feels as if you are walking into an abandoned home..."
The captivating abstract sonic imaginings of "Bob's your giddy aunt" by Norway's acclaimed hybrid rock fusion outfit Hedvig Mollestad Trio, and from their 8th album "Bees in the Bonnet", is a magical pressure cooker of a song, sludgy and beautifully imposing. The differences begin with the beginning with an absolutely eerie soundscape that feels as if you are walking into an abandoned home, think of a soundscape to an Ari Aster horror story. As the groove begins with a decidedly kind of metal meets doom jazz leans and incredibly textured, you feel that kind of anticipation, you know like what you feel when that roller coaster clicking it's way to it's first drop. That drop happens at 3 minutes and 37 seconds in when the metal jamminess churns in cool ways. The bass and dirty guitar jam stabs forward and leans on the back beat at the same time creating such crunch powerful and artful atmospheres.
It is great when an heavy metal jammy song begins to kind of deconstruct and build back up within the context of the instrumental narrative and this happens throughout the second half of "Bob's your giddy aunt". I adore the blistering parts and the sludge pop subversions, it all works and it all has a heavy air about it. This is to say that to feel the power of the distortions you have to be able to feel the space around them and that happens in spades here. Bravo. Absolute kudos to Hedvig Mollestad Trio who is Hedvig Mollestad on guitar, Ellen Brekken on bass, Ivar Loe Bjørnstad on drums and their ability to tell their stories and seemingly mind meld with each other in Spockian ways.
