The twangy forever indie rock progressive sweep of "Bitter" and "City Thing", by San Francisco's LOON, is a psychedelic tea steeped in decades of pure rock, stripped down to it's essential potent beauty. There is a lot going on genre wise or, rather, genre blending wise that I absolutely love. This is what makes the sound feel both nostalgic and forever, a portal into how old school music hall shifts effortlessly into Brit pop, into Americana, into folk, then folk rock to classic rock to indie rock / power pop to garage rock to punk and beyond. There sound is part of that musical strata that makes me think of 1970's jangle pop / power pop rock outfits like Graham Parker & The Rumour or The Motors that feels like lineage that lead to 80's / 90's indie rock bands like Gin Blossoms and Cracker or Marshall Crenshaw rolling in bits of rockabilly flowing up to 2000's garage rock twists on retro rock / blues punk of artists like Black Lips or Jacuzzi Boys and other bands who admittedly play indie rock with lineage traced back to the 60's.
"Bitter" with it's twangy lean toward southern rock or rockabilly swings but jamming so hard (the lead break for whatever reason had me flash on Elliot Easton or Brian Setzer or Dickey Betts) and I feel a sort of McCartney bass push in a couple of specific spots.
The dreamy American noir sound of "City Thing" is easy to fall in love with. Floating on bending chords, pedal steel sounds and evocative vocal harmonies, the sense is more chill desert rock or country-fried folk indie rock, (sort of) like an amalgam of Kevin Morby, Phosphorescent, Dr. Dog (or thereabouts).
LOON encompass a sound that you can absorb as a teen and all the way until you are retired and fishing on that lake from your childhood dreams.
