"Skin of sea / surrounding me / I'm diving down / Underneath..."
The artfully askew sonic screams of "Skin Of Sea", by Copenhagen-based alternative rock band Poptones, is a crunchy collision of metal and progressively drawn abstract rock. Quite certainly any of my descriptions will not do this track justice in terms of fostering any explanation of the sonic artistry or seeds thereof but I will say that to me, in my addled brain, "Skin Of Sea" feels like the flip side of Radiohead's "A Punch Up at a Wedding" from "Hail To The Thief". I am laughing to myself because, it may sound like a strange impression and Poptones here possesses a heavier alternative breathe than the songs on "Hail To The Thief" but my head kept going to that album. AND in my defense, the wonderful vocal patter, mysterious and introspective, has hints of Thom Yorke and the dreamy obtuse orchestrations in the last third of the song with bubbling guitar lines and jazz dipped sax fluttering might feel like a similar nucleic acid even though there is not borrowing here at all.
As a music writer, I generally listen to any given track on repeat and listening to "Sin Of Sea" in this way really highlights the shapeshifting quality in tone in musical modalities. I started on flashing on 70's psychedelia and fusion rock from the 2000's on and at certain points, my mind's eye started to see / feel a diverse sonic spread from Pink Floyd to Porcupine Tree to Tropical Fuck Storm. In any event, I am loving "Skin Of Sea". Poptones consists of singer and bassist Mads Bertelsen, guitarist Simon Hiemstra Christoffersen and drummer Anders Dahl Poulsen.
LINER NOTES:
[‘Skin Of Sea’ was made in a summerhouse by Denmark’s northern coast. The sketch was composed through intuitive and challenging improvisational games. It’s a grand and explosive tale of an inner emotional life—about the unexpected sense of security that can be found in the darkness. The lyrics revolve around loneliness and the search for meaning, which always seems within reach but constantly slips away.]
LYRICS
Skin of sea
surrounding me
I'm diving down
I'm diving down
Underneath
When the morning comes As I spin away
Spin away from jaws
And I close my eyes
Does anyone listen
The red brown earth Is hunting me
The splashing sun Is out of reach
The sea turning dark This specific part
I get further down And I close my eyes
Does anyone listen
When the morning comes As I spin away
Spin away from jaws
And I close my eyes
Does anyone listen
The red brown earth Is hunting me
The splashing sun Is out of reach
The sea turning dark This specific part
I get further down And I close my eyes
Does anyone listen

Poptones is a Copenhagen-based alternative rock band.
The band consists of singer and bassist Mads Bertelsen, guitarist Simon Hiemstra Christoffersen and drummer Anders Dahl Poulsen. As childhood friends from North Jutland, the sound of Poptones is the result of a long-term friendship that has grown into a natural understanding of each other as individual musicians. This understanding constitutes a shared frame of musical references that the three members of Poptones can actively draw upon for inspiration in the songwriting process. This shared frame of musical references is, among other things, constituted by the flourishing English rock scene and by bands such as Black Midi or Black Country, New Road but also the noisy and experimental Swans and the Canadian artist collective, Crack Cloud, leave their clear mark on their sound.
Their debutalbum, Between Darkness and Daylight, is digitally released on the 25th of November 2022, and the vinyls are set to be released March 2023. The album is written and produced together with Jens Ramon (Baby In Vain, Gooms, Figurines)
Back in 2020 Poptones released the EP 'Hunt', which was produced by Nis Bysted (Iceage, Astrid Sonne).
