"if you look / close into the sky / watching the clouds / how they're passing by / I felt so happy / watching them fly..."
The unbridled dreaminess and sonic punches of "We Were Tonight", by German progressive alt rock / psych rock band Ogrom Circus, feels seeded by bits of late 70's psych rock, 80's new wave, 90's post punk and 2000's retro rock atmospheres but as blended contemporary iterations of all those iconic lightning strikes. This is the thing though, the way that Ogrom Circus approaches their art, their craft, it does not feel like a rehashing or some kind of veiled homage to things before but, instead, just their natural way of being. You can feel the earnest passion and one unit musicality of many. To be a great band all members have to be great mind readers, know the next dynamic artistic steps maybe even before the other members and I feel that kind of unified front here.
I am loving songwriter / guitarist Hannes Fröhlich's vocal countenance that has grit and verve as well as emotional complexities. I think, still, it is the single most difficult thing for any band to find that kind of voice, not only in terms of songwriting but in terms of the expressions vocally. AND kudos to Florian Wenzel on keys / synth, Cornelius Hütter on bass, Wenzel Fröhlich on drums and Maxim Richter on vocals / guitar who all are supremely top shelf at elevating Fröhlich's songs.
"We Were Tonight" exists on the band's full length "the world barely makes a sound" available now on vinyl and all streaming platforms.
-LINER NOTES (excerpted /bracketed):
[After a few single releases, the full album "the world barely makes a sound" is now available on vinyl and all streaming platforms. Just like the singles, all tracks were recorded live to an old Tascam multi- track tape machine during two studio live session in 2023 and 2024.
The songs were written by Hannes Fröhlich and later arranged together with the full band. After playing music in different constellations for over ten years, the group has developed a natural way of working together — something that shaped the feel of the live recordings.
The tape recording gives the album a warm, slightly rough sound that matches the atmosphere of the songs.
Energetic rhythms, polyphonic vocals and massive organ sounds gonna revive the psychedelic of the sixties in a modern pop-robe.“]
