"i couldn’t tell you what it feels like / you got me dancin’ on a landmine / i’m tryin’ hard to keep my feet down on the ground / and I’m so happy I could fuckin’ cry / i got a feeling that i cannot hide..."
The exuberant indie rock twang of "I.W.A.L.Y." (I will always love you), by Washington D.C singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Dylan Rockwell, is a song you didn't know you needed and it's craveability quotient is, indeed, high. And, it doesn't mess around either but dives in instantly into a song that is broad pop in the sense of it's well produced come ons like the incorporating of hooky whistling (yes whistling) that inexplicably made me think of those cool Mentos commercials (in a super good way) but at the same time feels very raw and even ID rock-esque in it's free floating jamminess. A lot of that purely joyful fluidity has to do with Rockwell's vocal performance that not only feels exquisitely earnest but I love the way his melodies provide a wide emotional spectrum and the way they rush, ease back, chill out and mildly explode too. There is a lot going on and I thought of Wilco quite a bit and felt bits of of Tom Petty brilliance on the bridge. Wilco, Mentos, Petty, that is high praise in my mind.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
"A simple love song in the most grand sense possible. I.W.A.L.Y. is about overflowing with love and gratitude for your partner, your friends, your family, and humankind. Sometimes in our lives we’re lucky enough to have a moment where we really, truly, feel it. This song was written during one of those times and with the understanding that the feeling will always come around again." - dylan rockwell
In the final analysis, "I.W.A.L.Y." is a great song and one of those kinds of songs that feels perfect to sing along to, a song that easily straddles indie rock, folk rock, country rock and pop rock. I mentioned Tom Petty and no one is doing that kind of thing lately, a sound that feels so embracing and encompasses a lot of genres in an effortless way. This song is that. Cool.
