The rascalous post grunge / indie rock / power pop punches of "Always Right", by Grand Rapids - Michigan indie rock trio Secret Forte, stands on ever shifting sonic ground in the best possible way. The off kilter sense, genre wise / era wise makes for a full fledged diverse sound that made me think of a collision of artists like Everclear and They Might Be Giants or maybe a much beefier art punk Tally Hall. In the end a comparison really doesn't matter but what feels like the freewheeling 90's / 2000's atmospheres does makes me happy. The stripped down punchiness, penchant for dipping into musical absurdity and frivolity, chunky syncopated guitar strikes against other open picking sounds, rolling bass lines, nuanced drumming (the paradiddles against the lead guitar break is so sweet) and shouty vocals all feel raw and live and, for me, sounding live is always potently engaging.
