"I know you know that I couldn't stay / I know how you wanted me dead..."
The vast alt rock / emotional spiral and heavy breakdowns of "Thief", by Brisbane based indie five piece Jane Street, is a relationship (or maybe broken relationship) centric track that relays all the pain, passion, bluster and opaque melancholia of things getting messy between two people. In some ways, the rock structure here feels at once nostalgic as it does fresh. It is lovely to hear piano keys in this kind of balladic way that feels like late 70's or 80's storyteller rock as a jumping off and through line too as the power swinging guitar strikes highlight the emotional highs and lows. The shape shifting, the roller coaster musicality, ebbing at times, furious at other times is gloriously multi-faceted in Jane Street's approach. I appreciate the vocal countenance, the artful singing that at times gives way to more flustered bloodletting. I also appreciate the utterly emotional piano playing especially past the mid point eruptions of sound, the pained tenderness on the keys are absolutely felt before the big outro. Kudos to the tightly would musicality of all involved, the layers of both guitar players, the rolling bass lines and power drumming expressed with both light and heavy hands.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
['Thief' is the opening track off of Jane Street's upcoming EP, 'Everything I Am'.
It tells the story of someone holding onto a relationship they know cannot last. Both partners understand they will be happier once it ends, yet neither is willing to let go, clinging instead to the comfort it provides. Over time this limbo breeds a somber atmosphere that hardens into resentment and anger directed at the other, but rooted in the self. This is the world 'Thief' inhabits.]

Being formed in the heart of 2020, indie five piece, Jane Street, have been captivating audiences with their unique sound. Describing themselves as a mixture of bad decisions and red wine, their music style is hard to pinpoint. One minute they're playing an upbeat, reggae infused rock track about partying too much, the next they're doing a stripped back ballad about the bittersweet end of a relationship. Their only constants are the lyrically driven, emotional stories they craft, and their searing guitar tones. The band consists of Caelan (Vocals), Tannum (Bass), Harley (Guitar), Max (Keys), and Tyla (Drums). Caelan, Tannum and Harley have all been friends since before they could talk, with Caelan and Harley learning how to play their instruments together throughout primary school. Tannum on the other hand, picked up a bass for the first time a week before their first rehearsal as a favour to Caelan after he complained about being unable to find a bass player. They met Tyla after he responded to a Facebook ad. Max, their latest addition, was kidnapped from one of Harleys other bands. They now share joint custody, but Max has never fully recovered from those first few weeks.
