"how can I live / with what I've done / this bastard child will die / before it can talk / so I pour salt / in your hands..."
The angular heaviness, fuzz laden "Fog of War", by Brighton 4-piece M. Woodroe, feels as unrelenting as it does opaque in it's bloodletting. Heavy handed staggered drumming pounding away as thunderous bass whomps and stabbing guitar chops create a dense atmosphere of ravaging pain and survivorship at the same time as a darkly artful framework for Marcy's absolutely killer vocal countenance, steely eyed / scowling in such an evocative way. All this darkness makes for an absolutely cinematic sound for a dark indie film as directed by the likes of a Rose Glass or Prano Bailey-Bond.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Blending together influences of grunge and post-hardcore (Smashing Pumpkins, Refused) with Brit-pop and post-punk (the Stone Roses, the Cure), the song explores themes of lust and shame through its heavy use of distortion. M. Woodroe say: “Recording at Small Pond with Ben (Williams - engineer) was so valuable (and really fun) because, just like the writing process, it involved a lot of experimentation and trial and error with amps, hardware effects, and routing. At any point of the recording, we weren’t too sure what we’d do next which added to the excited feeling you can hear in the song.”]
"Fog of War" is track 4 on the Small Pond Volume V of their “Emerging” series dropping on Nov. 14th (today). The compilation showcases 20 talented young acts from Brighton & the surrounding areas!
AND
[Brighton-based indie label Small Pond’s “Emerging” project is giving 20 talented young acts (aged 16-25) in Brighton, Crawley, and surrounding areas, the opportunity to rehearse, record and release their music via Small Pond’s studio, label and marketing setup. The scheme, which has been awarded funding from Arts Council England, focuses on giving promising artists the opportunity to experience all stages in the production and promotion of a record. The resulting record will be released on 14th November with a launch event featuring a workshop and performances from some of the bands on the compilation at the Green Door Store in Brighton on 15th November.]
I look forward to delving in the Emerging project. It sounds like a totally awesome project that should be repeated in many indie scenes all over the world really.

The provocative alternative-rock band, M. Woodroe, was born out of the DIY scene in Brighton, UK. Noisy, grungy and angular, the 4-piece is loud and politically motivated - pushing boundaries with a wall of angst and frustration.
