"Take me to the edge, there's nowhere else to go / And don't you feel a strange relief, perhaps you'll never know / A middle class conceit, the hipster cuts his hair / And don't you feel a strange relief, coz you're not even there..."
The stripped down utter loveliness and sadness of "You Used To Look at Me", by Cardiff, UK three piece folk / indie rock dreamers The Crawling Eye, pushes nostalgic buttons while offering gentle gut punches. I am loving the breathe and scope of this track that, at once, feels like it draws from 60's, 70's Brit pop / folk while also drawing from 90's post punk and modern iterations of those genres / periods. I, love the stark constructions and Regan Meredith's evocative vocal countenance, full of pathos and steely eyes too. After repeated listens this feels like it should grace a film, love the guitar picking melodies, the synth strings, winding bass lines, and the adoring, potent vocals telling stories (great lyrics) that move us while making us want to read between the lines. As I thought about those in between line stories (made up or real) I thought of adjacent bands like Cocteau Twins and Harold Budd collab, The Byrds, The Animals and The Cranberries.
The Crawling Eye is Regan Meredith on vocals, Matthew Witherstone on guitar, keyboards, harmonica, vocals and Sean Davies on bass and vocals.

LYRICS:
Take me to the edge, there's nowhere else to go
And don't you feel a strange relief, perhaps you'll never know
A middle class conceit, the hipster cuts his hair
And don't you feel a strange relief, coz you're not even there
You used to look at me, as something you'd like to be
I think someday you'll see that you were wrong
Unfortunately named and criminally blamed
By anyone who cared to come along
Take me to my sister, I need a heavy glow
Focus on the locus of control you used to know
You used to look at me, as something you'd like to be
I think someday you'll see that you were wrong
Unfortunately named and criminally blamed
By anyone who cared to come along
Faces in the rain, they mostly look the same
And no reason, ain't no reason for you to still remain
Hopelessly withdrawn, forsaken and forlorn
You don't need this any more
You used to look at me, as something you'd like to be
I think someday you'll see that you were wrong
Unfortunately named and criminally blamed
By anyone who cared to come along
And don't you feel a strange relief, perhaps you'll never know
A middle class conceit, the hipster cuts his hair
And don't you feel a strange relief, coz you're not even there
You used to look at me, as something you'd like to be
I think someday you'll see that you were wrong
