"Your acid friends keep calling / While your mind is still unthawing / So you disconnect your phone / Might even change your name / And float away..."
The beautifully measured sweep and sadness of "Acid Friends" by L.A. based 'cosmic' rock band SENSOR NOISE, fronted by former child star, artist, actor, director Allisyn Synder, her husband (fellow Disney Channel alum) Dylan Synder and film composer / member of Pistol For Ringo- Steve Arm, sticks to you with it's nostalgic 80's new wave edges and a thousand nuances that not only hug you in a comforting way but provides gentle gut punches too. I have always likened songs to sonic Rorschach tests that might reveal something different to each and every listener (totally apart from what the songwriter is trying to say) and "Acid Friends" is really this kind of song. From the onset, it draws you in with a kind of 80's, 90's indie rock lit match, the kind of sound that is that sweet breath during a concert that might have had most worthy moments just before. I actually had a heavy dual memory sense of artists like Smashing Pumpkins and 'Til Tuesday in terms of the guitar constructions, the amazing rolling bass and drums dance, the subtlety of the lead licks, the pearly synths and the gorgeous falling synth arpeggios that glisten me with goose bumps every single time I hear them. ALL this is such a beautiful bath of melancholia for Allisyn's thoughtful vocal countenance, vulnerable, fragile and stoking memories like a dying fire.
Allisyn shares this about "Acid Friends":
"I grew up listening to Steve play this gorgeous little riff. He never gave it a title or bothered to write it down, but the first lyric was always, ‘your acid friends keep calling while your mind is still unthawing.’ Those words stuck with me, especially hearing them as a kid who had never tried drugs, imagining what it would feel like for my mind to unthaw."
In the end, the depth of swirling staring at the sky and reflecting on why and how and one's place in this crazy sometimes fucked up life is the feeling I get when diving into this track and staying in it's world for awhile. The song is accompanied with a fun Official Video that feels like friends (non-acidic ones) getting together to make something both silly and surreal. Yes, "Acid Friends" is stuck to me and will be for a long while. As an aside, this song is making me want to dip into The Postal Service which I haven't done in a while. Not sure what that means but I know it means something.
LYRICS
Your acid friends keep calling
While your mind is still unthawing
So you disconnect your phone
Might even change your name
And float away
You can’t recall where you’re headed
So you walk the block
In search of anything
That sparks a memory
Of a person or a place
Tied to today
Keep on Going
But don’t go too far
The prophet shouts
In his boom box that your
Days run out
And it’s up to you to
Cast away the doubt
That you are saved
It’s your own mind
Blocking the way
You wait in line
For a scratch off that could
Change your life
Five dollars is a
Decent price you’d have enough for
Cigarettes if you had
One more dime
Keep on Going
But don’t go too far
Keep on Going
But don’t go too far
So you disconnect your phone
Might even change your name
And float away
You can’t recall where you’re headed
So you walk the block
In search of anything
That sparks a memory
Of a person or a place
Tied to today
Keep on Going
But don’t go too far
The prophet shouts
In his boom box that your
Days run out
And it’s up to you to
Cast away the doubt
That you are saved
It’s your own mind
Blocking the way
You wait in line
For a scratch off that could
Change your life
Five dollars is a
Decent price you’d have enough for
Cigarettes if you had
One more dime
Keep on Going
But don’t go too far
Keep on Going
But don’t go too far
