"break glass / close those doting eyes / don't need you to realize / make it last / make it fast / take more of me..."
The artful orchestrations / stone cold seductions / emotional masochism of "Break Glass" by orchestral folk / art rock collective (sort of) Air Quotes, centered around composer / filmmaker Mattan Cohen (and creative cohorts), is a pure collision of pristine rock grandeur and stealthy subversions on high. There is so much to savor in, to bathe in from the rock operatic vocal layers with guitarist Eric Radloff leading the vocal charge, to one of the most magnetic bass line I have heard in quite a while by Tom 'Two Trips', to wonderful orchestrations by violinist Oleg V. Bezuglov & flutist Matthew Angelo and the nuanced power punching drumming by Sterling Laws. And I won't, for a nanosecond, forget to mention the vocal narrative here, which had me raising my eyebrows many times, not knowing if this song is stepping over boundaries, suffice it to say, this couple of lines by Air Quotes says it all:
"It's about hitting the sheets when you should be hitting up your therapist.""It's about making a bootycall when you should be bootycalling it quits."
In the end "BREAK GLASS" is one of those songs that give you more, the more you listen. The production has wonderful moments, sonic treasures to revel in, the mid-point musical break (alone) bears repeated listens and is a master class in composition and musical engineering / mixing.
Bravo.
