"English eyes / English eyes / Whatever you want this to be / It will be..."
The unrevealed happenings but beautiful bloodletting of "English Eyes" by Providence Rhode Island guitar driven folk / indie rock outfit Ugly Moon, founded by brothers Mike and Matt Mowry with bassist Johnny McMahon and drummer Ian McMillan, seeps into your head and heart like a magnetic film trailer. The Mowry's and creative cohorts keep it raw and offer glimpses into the human condition, tossing out morsels of pain and maybe even hard stiff drinks of hope. Sometimes I want songs to tell the whole story but sometimes, like this track, just peering through the blinds before they are aggressively shut is more powerful because those with curious minds fill in the blanks with their own struggles.
In the end "English Eyes" feels like a lot of things, a eulogy, a drinking song, the final song of a show, a tear jerker or that stiff drink or maybe like if Robert Frost wrote bruised up indie rock songs with a punk heart.

Aaah
aaah, aaah, aaah, laah, laah, lah,
So please, oh please
Save me, I bleed
Woe, my Eileen
Where's my Eileen
Come on, morphine
From acorns to ashes to nowhere to salt the blue sea
From half dead and twitching, a ghost where the rest used to be
So, I went to tell them a joke but the truth got obscene
It would crack up the band, but the humor well… it wasn't for me
So please, oh please
I sleep, I bleed
Woe, my Eileen
Where's my Eileen
Come on, morphine
