"Perfectly reflective, beautifully raw, undeniably elegant. - Robb Donker Curtius
The drop dead gorgeous sax-ual melancholia of "Powder" by multi-instrumentalist / producer / baritone saxophonist Nathanial Young, lulls you into a deep emotional state of memories, ones that might be filled with longing, ruminations on what could have been or pools of existential dread to swim in. The title track of a 9 jazz ballads album via Arden Records lead by Young as part of a quartet rounded out by Corey Gordon on drums, guitarist Roger Hallaway and Jesse Katz on bass. Recorded in Young's home studio, the sense here is lovingly stripped back, a sonic haunt in some non-descript bar where all the true jazz aficionados are privy to. I am loving the sense of ambiance, the weeping guitar chords, sweetly tumbling bass notes and the shuffling nuanced drum massages as an embracing framework for Young's mournful baritone sax.
Perfectly reflective, beautifully raw, undeniably elegant.
