"Everyone’s talking / But nobody’s saying a thing / I’m just sitting / Waiting for a thing to be said / Eyes on the center / With this beat in my head..."
The staggery alt pop / grand art funk punkery of "Scream" by alt pop inventor Lexi Carr, the musical moniker of songwriter Alexa Carrasco aka Creative Director for many artists (Sudan Archives, Future Islands,Vagabon and more), is instantly magnetic, a freewheeling mélange of genre cues and touchstones comprised of relatable narratives and jammy earworms. The sensibility here not only feels (to me) multi-generational but artistically / attitudinally a diverse combination experimental adult contemporary pop with leans toward performance art. So much to appreciate and be dazzled by like the drumwork that feels so solidly pop constructed as if to be played by the likes of a Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett (high praise), the squirrely synth warbles that have a wonderful 80's new wave pop texture, the aforementioned staggery musical and vocal stabs (the bass lines are delicious) and, of course, Carrasco's vocal countenance that feels so exquisitely self aware, confident and artful.
And while I cannot think of totally adjacent or direct comparisons, I can tell you that I somehow feel artful (maybe even psychic) connective tissue to (go with me on this) Fiona Apple's "Paper Bag" (2000), 80's performance artist Laurie Anderson's "Language Is a Virus", Peter Gabriel's 1986 "Sledgehammer" and FKA twigs' "Eusexua". Something about the singularly askew attitudes and textures, emotional discourse. Such a killer track that deserves a big, huge audience. This is the kind of song I would dream about seeing on a pivotal show like SNL.
Amazing.
Lexi Carr's song "Scream", produced by Oli Barton-Wood (Nilufer Yanya) & mixed by Cian Riordan (St Vincent), is featured on her 2026 EP titled "Everyone's Talking".

LYRICS
Everyone’s talking
But nobody’s saying a thing
I’m just sitting
Waiting for a thing to be said
Eyes on the center
With this beat in my head
Talk talk talking
There you are
All you can do is
Scream
Scream
I don’t wanna be with me
I don’t wanna be with me
Ana says you look pretty
Mary says you look fat
What you been eating?
What’s that dress?
Did you really get married in that?
Chat chat chatting
Tryna find how to be
Chat chat chatting
There you are
All you can do is
Scream
Scream
I don’t wanna be with me
I don’t wanna be with me
Mother’s lost her friends
They’re just old and they die
No use in crying
Well frankly there just isn’t time
Mother called the other day
She’s forgotten your name
And the neighbor towed your car away
Didn’t call you up
Just called the tow place
And the eucalyptus lost its leaves
And the way you wanna be
Is not the way
You should be
Scream
Scream
I don’t wanna be with me
I don’t wanna be with me
The Chicken Wheel will take you to the AP Go Fund Me- and any amount is so appreciated!

Lexi Carr is a feverish songwriter and a non-stop creator. Working as Creative Director on the visual side for artists such as Sudan Archives, although Lexi has been deep in the music scene for years, she’s always been shy about her voice. But you would never guess it listening to her songs. Lexi tells stories in off-kilter sing-song flow like she’s been doing it her whole life. And she has been, just, alone, in the walk-in closet she turned into her studio. Her debut EP “Everyone’s Talking” is the arrival of an artist you feel like you’ve known forever but have really just met. Is she rapping? No, she’s screaming. Take note.
