"while people scream / and people cry / remember why / we're here below / the good ones better keep below / uh haiye ..."
The artful garage rock or garage art rock brilliance of "Paper Straw", by Parisian post-rock/psychedelic quartet Bakakaï, has occupied a special place in my brain, in my heart. The wonderful fusion of psych rock, of indie rock, of post rock played / written in such abstractly artful progressive ways pretty much defies pretense and definition. As much as I like to define things, when it comes to this sound, this band I feel like it is just better to soak it all in at once. The tonal shifts will surprise you, the depth of musicianship will delight you and the massive amounts of distortion and creative dissonance is mesmerizing. There is nothing cookie cutter here.
"Paper Straw" ("about paper straws and billionaires fleeing to the heaven") is the opening track to their most recent EP called "Bonbec". I don't have a whole lot to offer about the enigmatic Bakakaï but will be delving into their 'stuff' past and present.
LOVE the sound here.
