"in the valley of the winter do I sit still / and paint a pretty picture for you until / I am a snow man / a slope man / a break from the question of where do I go, man..."
The beautifully wistful / emotional folk rock organica of "The Snowman" by Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Dylan Cox, and from his sprawling sophomore album"Gargantua", feels intimate drawn, poetically wrought and seemingly grounded by catharsis. I am loving the nimble movements, the interplay between acoustic piano and guitar, the solid bass and drums dance as a moving untied framework for Dylan's storytelling. Listening from a distance, the lyrical content floats past in mysterious ways but captures me just the same, makes me want to decipher the hidden stories between the lines like a detective. I am loving the overall presence. The song tonally moves like an animal full of life which makes sense as I find out that this album was recorded LIVE to tape with a full band at the Los Angeles studio of Luke Temple which is so, so impressive. All the songs written by Dylan who provides guitar and vocals (of course), with drums by Abe Rounds, keys courtesy of Benny Bock and bass by Alan Hampton.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[“Gargantua” is a raw and deeply personal portrait of heartbreak and grief, written during the years Dylan moved back home to Los Angeles after spending years in France. It is a meeting of waters, a reckoning with demons and with song, an ode to the joy of the natural world, a record with the windows wide open in all of Cox’s poetic might. With control, maturity, and growling force, this is Cox expansively meeting himself, a gentle hand reaching into personal ether.]
