"I lost trust in graphs and numbers / ‘Cause they change their meaning all too often / 1 plus 1 is 2 I thought / Yet someone always claims I’m wrong / Depending which side I’m on..."
The indie folk rock roll and rolling folk grounded propulsive rock of "Expert" by Mo Klé, the moniker of Swiss songwriter René Grünenfelder, is a track built out of many things. I love the driving late 70's to late 80's indie rock noir elements that make me think of Tom Petty (actually) and the mid aughts indie rock revisions that make me think of The Sound or the current garden rock flowers of artists like Kevin Morby and Dungen. Now I don't mean these comparisons or descriptors as direct sounds but more like artistic attitudes and lyrical thought provocations whether veiled with social commentary or politico thought bubbles.
One thing that makes me want to listen, is Grünenfelder vocal countenance that feels comfortable while feeling knowing or maybe more to the point, pointedly self aware of what he is feeling. It is like his songs are secrets he decides to share and his sense of melody as, a bohemian street philosopher of sorts (I mean in the 60's he would have certainly been a beat poet) is evocative and just damn pretty, an appetizer and main course all at once.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
LYRICS
I lost trust in graphs and numbers
‘Cause they change their meaning all too often
1 plus 1 is 2 I thought
Yet someone always claims I’m wrong
Depending which side I’m on
I got lost in words and speeches
of journalists and politicians
They debate like greek philosophers
Idly on a hill
Don’t they know they know nothing at all
Everyone is an expert
Everyone gives advice
Rumours turn to facts
And facts turn into lies
Their lies will be the proof that only your beliefs are true
In the end it needs an expert to fool an expert too
I am confused by all the rumble
And the roaring in this jungle
What is right, what is left, even ,
what is odd
I am hopelessly deluded
I guess so are you
But sometimes I play along
And pretend to know it all
So listen carefully cause here comes my advice
When someone claims to be an expert
Think about it twice
‘Cause they change their meaning all too often
1 plus 1 is 2 I thought
Yet someone always claims I’m wrong
Depending which side I’m on
I got lost in words and speeches
of journalists and politicians
They debate like greek philosophers
Idly on a hill
Don’t they know they know nothing at all
Everyone is an expert
Everyone gives advice
Rumours turn to facts
And facts turn into lies
Their lies will be the proof that only your beliefs are true
In the end it needs an expert to fool an expert too
I am confused by all the rumble
And the roaring in this jungle
What is right, what is left, even ,
what is odd
I am hopelessly deluded
I guess so are you
But sometimes I play along
And pretend to know it all
So listen carefully cause here comes my advice
When someone claims to be an expert
Think about it twice

Mo Klé is the stage name of the Swiss songwriter René Grünenfelder. He manages to capture the essence of his songs with just an acoustic guitar, an unmistakable voice, and acerbic lyrics in English, German or Swiss German when performing live.
