The massive art rock / post punk grandeur of "Hollow Heart", by Bay Area project Everything But The Everything, feels like a mystery within a mystery. Artistically, tonally the soundscape draws you into something that feels like a story that could very well take place during the pivotal indie renaissance of the early 80's but also from some future place, the sonic sweep is that wide. I am loving the airiness displayed that pushes an almost kind of Lynchian mood (I mean just immerse yourself into the musical descent from 3:20 to around 4 minutes that feels like a full on brain melt, a gorgeous artful one) and what comes before is magnetic as well. The song opens with a piercing guitar sustain as a bold, songwriter / producer Izzy The Gent's brazen boomy bass holds sway supported with heavy tom tom punctuations, this all for a framework for a powerful duet of sorts. YOU don't hear a lot of powerhouse voices nowadays but here you here both. Sophia Prise has pipes galore and a storytelling vocal countenance that holds you in her hands, like an amalgam of luminaries like Annie Lennox / Johnette Napolitano /Alison Moyet and contemporary singers like Florence Welch / Madeleine Mathews. Her male counterpart, Tobias Hawkins stuns as well as a spotlight singer (one you have to flood light upon) like an blend of singers like Mickey Thomas from Jefferson Starship, Chris Cornell, Matt Bellamy, Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees), Midge Ure (Ultravox) and M. Shadows (Matthew Charles Sanders). The result of such a dreamy musical bed and grand sonic belters feels so fucking cinematic, in truly unique ways.
