"The arms of heaven are something to spy / The little death glows in field of the night / It goes leering / Sweet doom..."
The deceptively dreamy, tripping art rock grandeur of "Little Death" by Steady Sun, the indie psychedelic sweeping band centered around Brooklyn / Queens songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Dylan Nowik, feels at once like a surreal psych rock trip as it does an art rock opus about heightened mental states and / or sexual release. Whichever it is, is beside the point or maybe 'beyond' the point because the eeriness of the bending carnival mirror guitar lines, the sludgey cadence, funky cool drumming, the wholly cool lead guitar's dirty penetrations, the fluty sounds, the percolations that sound like something between a mandolin and a banjo, the amazing art rock musical bridge that feels baton lead with cello, gnarly synth, fuzz bass (I think) and that super dirty guitar lead, all stand as an other worldly but inviting musical framework for Nowik's vocal countenance that feels artfully high (so to speak). I love how the vox are handled too whether Nowik is doubling down on the vocal tracks, self harmonizing or bolstered by his talented co-horts it all feels like falling down multiple multi-colored rabbit holes.
"Little Death" is from Steady Sun's third full length album "Joy".
LYRICS
The arms of heaven are something to spy
The little death glows in field of the night
It goes leering,
Sweet doom
The little death paints in color-red
I’m running and twisting in fear of the dead
The big move
I’m waiting
For
You
Though it beckons me, but I could not go,
And though it shines a light as
[We are nearing]
Do not follow
And though it beckons me, but I could not go
I wonder what you’re hearing
[We are nearing]
Fear is hollow
I try to tell me, but something’s awry
The little death looms in black of the sky
[We are nearing ]
Our tomb
But why fixate, and cry every mile?
The water is clear, and bright is the fire
Against fear
I do
And though it beckons me, but I could not go
I wonder what you’re hearing
[We are nearing]
Do not follow
And though it beckons me, but I could not go
And though it shines a light as
[We are nearing]
Fear is hollow
