"Viper / Breaker / Viper / Take her / Down down down / Off your cloud / Upon altar / Wilted flower..."
The trippy, swirling vast alt rock psychodrama of "Viper", by Los Angeles based Taleen Kali, pulsates with a core sound that feels at once, art rock-ian, proggy post rock, psychedelic garage rock with riot girl grunge undercurrents. This layer cake approach is obviously a tasty one, drawing you into this massive sound that has so much to give that it will surely appeal to those who partake in raw genres as well as those who swim in more sophisticated / cinematic soundscapes. To me, the big sound here does feel very grand / anthemic. "Viper" is stadium sized creating haunting sonics, big darkly romantic places for your mind to go into. The sense is like a battle being waged whether actual or spiritual, socially or politically or in the depths of one's soul.
Attitudinally, artistically, the sheer heaviness mixed with a sort of core goth aesthetic has me thinking of artists like Metz, like The Cure, like A Place to Bury Strangers and even art rock outfits like Muse or shoegaze or indie rock acts like Asobi Seksu or Autolux. Sorry for being so scattered in my thoughts here but Taleen Kali is obviously melding a lot of indie iconongraphy into something all her own, plus the big dreamy voice is daydream inducing which is always a good sign. Music that makes your mind wander, stir up your own personal memories is a good sign. It means that the artist is building soundtracks of a lot of people's lives.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
“Viper” takes a heavier turn for the band which sounds like it’s almost veering into metal territory–not quite psych, not quite doom–but rather metallic in its affect. The song is written in the form of a palindrome, it has this cyclical format that isn’t like any of our previous songs. I wanted to write a song about the fractured feminine, about what can happen when we try to break someone down over and over again and again. I remember seeing this nature video of a bright blue viper coiled and perched on top of a red rose, and the rose was holding up the entire weight of this thing–it wouldn’t bend or break. It was fascinating so it became the artwork for the single and informed a lot of the visuals of our music video.]

Hailing from her native Los Angeles, Taleen Kali composes romantic punk songs wrapped in layers of shoegaze, psychedelia, & riot grrrl grunge, creating a cosmic sound that's dreamy & defiant alike. With their fiery live sets & swirling sonics, the band has quickly become a staple in the L.A. music underground. When her band TÜLIPS went out with a bang at their final headline show at The Regent Theater in 2016, Kali went solo, sharing bills with indie luminaries such as Ex Hex, Alice Bag, Seth Bogart, & touring the country. “Soul Songs” was Taleen Kali's debut EP produced by Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls) & mixed by Brad Laner of Medicine. It was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood & found the band's riot grrrl ethos maturing into a polished punk sound with noise pop & new wave influences. Currently, Kali & her band are gearing up for the release of their first full-length album, Flower Of Life, recorded at The Cave Studio in the winter of 2022 with producers Jeff Schroeder of The Smashing Pumpkins & Josiah Mazzaschi (Bizou, Light FM, Child Seat). The title track debuted as the album’s first single on KEXP in April 2022, followed by singles "Only Lovers Left Alive," "Fine Line," and "Tomorrow Girl." The final single from the album, "Crusher," dropped on February 10th and the band is doing their 2nd full U.S. tour in support of "Flower Of Life' out March 3, 2023 on Dum Dum Records.
