AP Track Review
Ha, ha-- sorry. I know that maniacal laughing is a rather odd way to start off a music review but as I listen to Holly Winter's vocals framed within guitarist Thomas Scriven's fuzz as the duo / band Repenter on their new track Skeletons, it was my immediate reaction. Not "ha, ha" funny but a release of unadulterated joy and maybe stress because their vast, punchy rock sound feels so crushingly, well, pure as in purely rock, yes R O C K. There is no need to couch it in post punk terms, thought there are elements of it or as garage rock (hints of that) or alternative rock (obvious touches) or metal (underpinnings) but just rock will do. That is all you have to say really and, of course, listen and take it in because Winter's voice contains a very self assured comfortable... undeniable power. Husky, strident, intimate, full bodied and, in a way, classically bad ass. In a past review to their stellar track So Sick I brought up female rockers like Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) and Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) in describing Winter's aesthetic. Winter's is a much needed voice in today's landscape where pure rock has shifted to other forms and we are left with Greta Van Fleet as it's so called saviors. Those boys are just that, boys who seem to come from some sort of School of Rock world where imitation pretends to be originality. Repenter and bands like Repenter with new true real rock voices are what will fortify the genre. Skeletons is an amazing track and I cannot wait until the album drops.
