"a song of subtleties"
Katie Blount's terribly raw and revealing Dark Water is a bare flesh and bones performance of Blount's voice and guitar strum. I have likened her classic folk presence to that of Joan Baez and I still think that descriptor holds true although Blount's vocal aesthetic has a different timbre and sometimes her melodies, her voice tumbles a bit more gymnastically. Both artists do share the absolute ability to bleed on tape and with only themselves to hold up the performance. It is a daring thing to do.
Of the song, Blount says:
"Dark Water is a song of subtleties, a gradual unwinding of a relationship and a slow burning of the last embers of pain. It is sung from the perspective of someone who realizes their relationship has come to an end and who is wading through the subtle and often hidden signs that now seem so clear. The opening line takes you into the song immediately: 'I knew it was over when you gave me a glimpse into your eyes and nothing was returned'. Lines like 'If your heart could speak what language would it use?' pull you deeper into its melancholy sadness."
By the end of the song, the melancholy has not subsided but the knowledge that Blount has the strength to endure is displayed in the cadence of her melodies and the lilt of her amazing voice.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
After being featured and interviewed on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire; receiving a coveted 5 Star album review from RnR Magazine and being featured in Americana UK, For Folk's Sake and Echoes and Dust, Katie Blount returns with a video premiere of 'Dark Water’ on February 20th, from her recently released album of the same name.
Dark Water is a song of subtleties, a gradual unwinding of a relationship and a slow burning of the last embers of pain. It is sung from the perspective of someone who realizes their relationship has come to an end and who is wading through the subtle and often hidden signs that now seem so clear. The opening line takes you into the song immediately: 'I knew it was over when you gave me a glimpse into your eyes and nothing was returned'. Lines like 'If your heart could speak what language would it use?' pull you deeper into its melancholy sadness.
Katie not only gets into the depths of the emotion lyrically but slowly unwinds it through an unusual melody that bends and twists into unexpected places. A melody so unique it reminds you of no other artist. Asked recently where her 'Dark Water' is Katie replied 'My Dark Water is in those experiences in life that force you to move towards your pain. Sometimes we don't want to fully experience it because we're too afraid, but the only way out of the dark water is through.' The video captures the feeling and temperature of the song and moves like an impressionistic painting from the abstract back to the emotion. Katie has utilized the split screen technique to further illustrate the distance between these two people who are slowly moving apart.
When talking about the making of the video, Katie said, 'I wanted the video to express the subtlety of what was happening in the song. I began to realise quickly that was very difficult to do, as I didn't want the imagery to be obvious or too abstract and lose a sense of connection. I wanted to find a way of expressing the emotional internal landscapes while showing the reality of what is slowly unfolding.'
Katie Blount has been compared to the old singer-songwriter masters of music, ‘Reminiscent of a grand past, in a grand era, with grand artists and musical sages…’ and is known for her original creative use of lyrics and music videos, with lines like ‘Fingerprint my mind for evidence’ and ‘I’ve been fooled by the weight of a rolling dice that only ever landed in mid-air’. These songs aren’t lighthearted tunes, but ones that draw you into the heart and soul of who we are underneath our disguises. ‘I want to bring all the elements together from the songwriting, the videos and the production so that each one belongs to the other’
Katie has released her album 'Dark Water' on Jan 31st 2020 which she recorded and produced herself. She built a home studio and made a vocal booth from an old doctor’s screen she bought on eBay. ‘I tried to keep the production as simple as possible, only adding what the song needed and leaving the rest to breathe.’ She has also created all her music videos by scouring the internet for clips and then splicing them together to create some really interesting sequences that further illustrate the story of the song.
