New Zealand's indie foursome Marlin's Dreaming's new ever so dreamy, yet ever moving Sink or Swim is a song about detachment, about fluttering through life like a leaf blown by the wind, of losing sight of plans and purpose. It is easy to do, isn't it? These days with so much information pouring into your eyes and ears and overloading your brain makes it more easy to become a zombie.
The song has a beautiful bass and drums bottom end and the drumming with divergent fills and rushed punctuations are incredible. But then those flourishes tie into the pearly guitar lines that fill in spaces but equally hang in the air with dramatic sort of surf rock affectations. Semisi Maiai's vox feel introspective and, tonally, feel tender, pretty and emotionally sad all at once. When the musical break happens at the end of the song the patterned guitar picking make you want to run as fast as you can away from the mindless dinge in your head and to something solid.
“It’s a song about detachment, the feeling of struggling to be present and feeling like I was at the whim of something outside of myself,” offers frontman Semisi Maiai, “I wrote it over the last year where I felt like I was going through motions of living without much pre-consideration or afterthought, just simply doing things as they happened.”
Sink or Swim blends exquisite musicality, layered sounds, and vocals that say something.

New Zealand indie outfit Marlin’s Dreaming have today released the first single, "Sink or Swim," for their forthcoming album, Quotidian. The single premiered exclusively with Atwood Magazine praising, "The honesty of the release only adds to the many layers of what makes Marlin’s Dreaming who they are. If the following tracks are anything like the first, then Quotidian is a record that should be on any music-lover’s radar."
“It’s a song about detachment, the feeling of struggling to be present and feeling like I was at the whim of something outside of myself,” said frontman Semisi Maiai about the inspiration for the new song. “I wrote it over the last year where I felt like I was going through motions of living without much pre-consideration or afterthought, just simply doing things as they happened.”
Despite the darker lyrics, Sink or Swim is buoyed by a driving tempo and the distinctive pop feel which have coloured the band’s two previous albums.
The self-directed music video with support from New Zealand filmmaker Martin Sagadin pokes fun at the motivation for the song, the idea of being prodded around and losing touch with one’s own intentions.
“At its core, Sink or Swim speaks to a rather strange period of time for me, but for the music video we wanted to focus on the lighter side, with the guitar drenched melody and bubbling chorus,” said Semisi.
