At a certain point while listening to Western Sun by the 7 piece psyche rock soul punk outfit known as ISTA I left the small dining room I was occupying, sitting at a kitchen table on my computer and I was elsewhere. That elsewhere was a conglomeration of places, a super-natural mixture of a multicolored row house in San Francisco, with crashing waves within view where surfers were kicking up rooster tails. There was a loving packed party going on, in and outside that house, with a rocking band and John Dwyer (in cut / torn jeans shorts and swirling tank top) was partying. His yelps blending with the song perfectly.
When the song ended I was back alone in my social distancing self imposed quarantine but damn it was nice to get out. Western Sun is so dense with sonic images and, yes, at certain points when the song becomes incredibly jammy with double time distorted guitars, bass running, drums gunning, I did think of Thee Oh Sees a bit, hence the Dwyer daydream. It does also bring to mind, the psychedelia deep in the bones of Frisco. It is a time bender of a song that cooks along so well. Oh, and I was afforded this great escape courtesy of ISTA without any, um, stimulants to do so.
