"poetry is drawn from my lips"
Connecting to an artist, to a song, to a sound is such a personal thing but for most of us the emotional tether is through that voice. I mean, it is not always the case and, in fact, there are many iconic bands that are not vocally-centric, other elements hold you like the fury of the music or the overall passion but in the case of Sam Nichol, a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist out of Franklin, Tennessee, the voice may be the most important vital connection (at least, at first). Nichol has a vocal aesthetic that is simply stunning. Listen to his latest offering, Jane and you will feel it from the moment he utters a sound. It is not only the sonic characteristics of his voice but the emotions he is able to embrace and convey. The tremble, the lilt, the dynamics that feel like they are bouncing within his instrument and moving out. Love this man's voice. Jane, is my first introduction and the man can write moving songs too. The production ebbing and flowing (at it's core on piano and acoustic guitar rhythms) is dynamic and moves from subtle quiet moments to orchestrated eruptions. The melodies and words, of course, convey the message and his voice sends it straight to our hearts.
Of the track Nichol offers:
"Jane grows to mean more to me the more I play it. I wrote it initially as a reflection on lust and consequence, but as the lyric developed I found my mind being pulled into multiple directions and onto different subjects. for me Jane can be applied to depression, or being caught in an abusive (or unhealthy) relationship, or destructive loneliness that one can't seem to shake. to me, Jane is a picture of how art and song can grow and change with the listener. I hope that you can receive something from the song that hasn't occurred to me yet."

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
Sam Nichol is a singer-songwriter hailing from Franklin, Tennessee. Sam’s musical career began early, as he started learning classical piano, from there he took up the trumpet and played that through a significant portion of his middle school and high school years. As a freshman in high school, Sam discovered guitar. He immediately fell in love with the way that he could create new and exciting chordal structures, and accompany himself in song. Writing seemed to be a natural next-step to his playing and he excelled in it quickly. It was not long before Sam realized that he wanted to pursue songwriting and performing professionally, so he began an education at Trevecca University as a Commercial Music major with an emphasis in guitar and songwriting.
His unique style finds it’s roots in Indie Folk/Americana, but also proudly exhibits his classical training and jazz influences. While his natural talent is evident, it didn't always come easy; Sam has spent a significant amount time honing his style and his skill into a palpable tone. Blending this writing style with his classical experience, his jazz influences, and his passion for unique commercial music, Sam created a refreshing style with insightful messages.
Sam has recently started to perform on guitar with established artists and is travelling with Andrew Greer, Cindy Morgan, and Ginny Owens. His talent has not gone unnoticed at Trevecca either; as he has been selected to participate in the first-ever songwriter incubator program where he will be exposed to a number of other established artists through co-writes and one-on-one meetings, and learn with professionals in the music industry.
