"it doesn't have to be, have to get bad to get better"
Backdrop is a track that is seriously dreamy, dense and beautifully complex. It is the title track of The Kraken Quartet's and Adobo's (guitarist / singer Nay Wilkins of Hikes) latest collaborative EP. The Kraken Quartet's artistic forte is percussion and electronica, fusing together sounds from a vibraphone, marimba, two drum kits (and players), various keyboards and synths from 4 multi-instrumentalists and adding a nimble virtuoso guitarist like Wilkins is an inspirational decision. Anyway you slice it, the sounds on Backdrop (the song) are heavenly. Wilkins style with her frequent pickings and harmonics match perfectly with the percussive tones. Her vocal aesthetic is equally pure and smoothly wrought. The puzzle pieces literally feel like gears made out of tactile artistic materials clicking away like the Quartet and Adobo are an intricately moving music box. When the massive sort of post rock / art rock eruption happen you might feel you explode inside too from awe.
The Kraken Quartet and Adobo are Nay Wilkins (guitar, vocals), Andrew Dobos (marimba, keyboard), Taylor Eddinger (drum set, synthesizers), Sean Harvey (drum set) and Chris Demetriou (vibraphone).
