"I sit and watch you sleep at night and cry all day"
Good Dog by Cream with a K is a deceptive hybrid of a song that slowly gets under your skin. On one hand if feels sort of baroque pop-esque, (wait 'till you hear the piano break), on the other hand electro pop with commercially pop forward bones and on the other hand (I have three hands in this instance), it has this Casio-fied pop quality and I love that the trap beat is so obviously a drum machine. Lee Tatlock (aka Cream with a K) masterfully bridges all these flavors together into one delicious doggy treat, dog bone (sorry- I failed miserably). Her vox are coy, sometimes flirtatious with melodies that feel almost presented in an internal way, like she is talking to herself. The lo-fi lullaby tone works because overdoing this would sound too audacious. This is not the kind of track to make an anthem out of although I could see a producer trying, it is perfect the way it is.
"I'm a good dog, I'm a good dog today"
Tatlock shares:
"This song actually started out as a romance story, using the idea that I was a dog as a metaphor. The song is written from a loyal dog's point of view of the world. It's a sweet and sad song that's deeply touching. However the arrangement is very modern whilst almost lullaby like."
I am an ardent pet lover, love my pit bull lab Lucy and I guess all of us dream of a world where people would be loyal, full of unconditional love and happy as hell to see us when we step through the door but then being too adorable and too subservient has it's emotionally crushing dark side. There is a dark and light to Good Dog. Tatlock infuses sad esteem shrinking tones and sad eyes in her vocal performance illuminating the duality here, the sense that unconditional can tip over into being taken advantage of. In the end, Good Dog is as much a caveat as a comely sing-a-long and I love that.
Tatlock is based out of London, adopting the role of DIY grunge pop musician who self produces records, does it all. A former J-pop idol fronting the JPop band NEKO PUNCH for 8 years, she is fluent in Japanese. Also a visual artist and did her stint modeling.
Cream with a K's indie pop Good Dog will quietly wrap it's collar around your neck and pull you into it's cool vibe full of warm desires, dark hard looks in the mirror and belly rubs.
