"I don't give a damn, I'm stuck in Amsterdam"
Davey Allen is a California singer songwriter / multi- instrumentalist who fronts his own band Davey and the Midnights as well as performing keyboard duties for Eric Burdon (and the Animals). He just released his sophomore full length solo album called "MAY DAY". The single is Amsterdam, a spartan affair with acoustic guitars, pedal steel sounds that stair step in psychedelic ways and Allen's gritty evocative garden rock vocal aesthetic, "I don't give a damn, I'm stuck in Amsterdam". As tenderly compelling as this track is, I can only imagine what might of gone on, the tension and awkwardness of what inspired the song in the first place. Allen offers:
"I was involved in an altercation with Eric Burdon, promoters, managers, security, police, and audience members backstage in Amsterdam SEPT 2019. This song is an overview of our euro tour that was cut short due to the altercation and the next week spent in the Netherlands with other current members of Eric Burdon and the Animals."
Well at least this happened in the Netherlands. Dutch people, as a whole, seem less violent than others (typed with a faint smile). If you want to find yourself immersed in roots rough stories, dive into "MAY DAY". Songs like Davey (a sprite, haunting sort of tale), Universal Basic Income (a honky tonk diorama on money and the consequences it all brings, is charming and thought provoking), The Man In The Photo (a wistful charmer that feels like loving reflections of family the morning after a bender - lovely), Abide In Me (a time bending instrumental piece of gospel meets spiritual), Growing Old (a dusty acoustic sad merry-go-round of sadness) and more, feel like cinematic Polaroid journeys all told with Davey's wonderful voice.
