"that people care at all"
South Yorkshire (UK) based artist Drew Davies just released his debut self-titled album and track seven is the evocative X and Y. Upon the very first listen a few days ago, it's lush jagged sway has been stuck in the back of my mind. Davies, from the onset, layers in imagery, the song has a radical sway and serious downbeat (and maybe under some serious moonlight). While Davies is a talented singer I must admit that I wanted to hear David Bowie sing his words, "so if you'll wear my jeans then I could wear your dress... no more x and y and no more second best" and it is not that X and Y sounds exactly like a Bowie song (it does not) but it possesses that exquisite sway and pushed vocal melodies. Bravo to Davies for his ability to find yet another poetic way to suggest gender bending and to make me think of the man himself (that I miss so much).

Hailing from South Yorkshire, Davies comes from a long line of singers and musicians. He has spent the better part of the last decade treading the boards of venues and festivals across the UK and Europe with various bands, working in musical collaborations, writing for other artists and singing in session gigs to get by. Through successes, setbacks and everything in between, he has poured himself into his musical labours, and has now produced his most personal work to date.
Pulling from a wide array of influences, Drew Davies is inspired by everything from 50’s rock n’ roll to electronica, citing acts such as The National, Scott Walker, Vangelis and Tom Petty. From this palette of familiar reference points he has created a genre-bending and timeless sound that bears semblance to the likes of Future Islands, and The War On Drugs.
